Helpful Information

Parents and families Thurgood Marshall Elementary Parent & Family Resource Center is open 8:00am-3:00pm Monday-Friday, and is located in our Learning Cottage LC#106. Once we return to on campus visitation you are welcome and encouraged to make yourselves at home in the Parent Center. Stop in often and get to know your Title I Parent Liaison, Ms. Sheri Moore-Change. She will invite you in to take Parent Academy Workshops and offer you volunteer opportunities that will help you, your school and your child to grow in creative ways.

You may also use the computer, check the Community & School News Bulletin Board, and borrow educational materials, games and books. Working with your child at home increases his or her academic standing at school. Ms. Change will help you learn about the benefits of Title I as well as navigate school policy and culture. She will walk you through who’s who and what to do to be an effective advocate for your child and an equal partner with your school in your child’s education.

You have a great facilitator and friend in Ms. Change if your goal is to get more engaged in your child’s school life and increase his or her academic achievement. Below are some of the educational materials that you can borrow from the Parent Lending Library a month or two at a time. Please call Ms. Change at 678.827.7942 if you would like to make an appointment (socially distancing) to borrow materials and get tips on creative and fun ways to use them to help your child at home. After all, you are VIP at Thurgood Marshall Elementary and you are your child’s first and most influential teacher.

Family Conversations: If you are a working parent, you may long for a quiet evening with minimal conversation. However, dinnertime provides the perfect opportunity to come together and hear about everyone's day. Conversations with your second grader [or any grade level] are also important for vocabulary development.

Here are some conversation starters:

What special activities did you do today?
What was the best part of your day?
Did you have any problems today?
How did you solve your problem?
Did you check out any good books from the library?

Parents you can borrow Dinner Conversation Cards from the Parent Resource Center. I truly hope to see you soon!
